Nineteen players on Clemson's roster are from the state of Florida. That includes seven who are being red-shirted this year. The list also includes five players from Jacksonville who will have a personal home game when Clemson plays Nebraska in the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl. The Tigers from Jacksonville are Jamie Harper, Kyle Parker, Xavier Brewer, Daniel Andrews and Matt Skinner. Only Harper and Andrews, high school teammates at Trinity Christian, have played this year. The other three are red-shirting.
Seven of the 12 active players from Florida are starters. The top players include C.J. Spiller (Lake Butler), Chris Clemons (Arcadia) and Chris Chancellor (Miami).
Jacksonville has been a big recruiting area for Clemson over the years. Brian Dawkins, an All-American at Clemson from 1992-95, who has been to the Pro Bowl six times with the Philadelphia Eagles, and David Treadwell, an All-American at Clemson in the 1980s as a kicker, are two prominent former Tigers from Jacksonville. Patrick Sapp, who is now the sideline reporter for Clemson's radio network, was a four-year player as a quarterback and linebacker at Clemson from 1992-95. Jamaal Fudge, who played for the Tigers from 2002-05 is another Tiger from Florida who has been in the NFL. He played with Jacksonville in 2006 and 2007 and is now with the Atlanta Falcons.
