July 27, 2004

Facing third-and-goal from the 8 in the second quarter against Tennessee, Clemson called a timeout, then quickly huddled near the line of scrimmage. The Tigers hurried to the ball in a box formation, with Whitehurst joined in the backfield by three other players.

He took a snap in the shotgun, then leaned forward and reached through Browning's legs and handed him the ball. After pausing for a moment, Browning raced to the left while the rest of the backfield went right, and he easily scored for a 24-14 lead.

This is the third time Clemson has used the "Panther" play since Tommy Bowden has been at Clemson and the Tigers have scored a touchdown all three times. In 2001 Clemson used the play against Virginia and Terrance Huey scored on a 16-yard run. Later that year in the Humanitarian Bowl, Airese Currie scored on a 19-yard run on the play in Boise, ID against Louisiana Tech. Browning made it three in a row this evening.
