Former Clemson football player Joey Walters was one of 10 inductees into the inaugural Florence Area Hall of Fame recently. The former wide receiver for the Tigers was a co-captain on the 1976 team. The West Florence High School alum caught 26 passes for 392 yards and two touchdowns that season and was sixth in the ACC in receptions. One of his touchdown receptions came in Clemson's 15-12 win at Florida State.
Walters continued his playing career in the NFL, USFL, and Canadian Football League. Walters played for the Houston Oilers in 1987, after spending time with the Washington Federals and Orlando Renegades of the USFL. He also played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL and was inducted into the team's Plaza of Honor in 1990.
Walters now works with Florida Citrus Sports in Orlando, a not-for-profit organization that produces the Champs Sports Bowl. Walters is the director of the organization's youth summer camp for disadvantaged children and the Walt Disney World Florida Classic, a historically black college football game that features Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University.
Walters was one of five inductees being honored in football, including former New York Giants' All-Pro Harry Carson. The induction ceremony was held at the Florence Civic Center on January 14.
