Position:
Graduate Assistant Coach - Defense

Daric Riley is entering his third season as the Tigers' Defensive Graduate Assistant and his 11th collegiate coaching season overall. He has worked with three positions on the defense thus far; bandit ends and Sam linebackers and is currently assisting Coach Charlie Harbison with the secondary. Not only will Riley work with the secondary this season, he will have an added roll assisting Coach Andre Powell with all phases of the Clemson special teams.

Riley arrived at Clemson after spending the 2004-2006 seasons at NCAA Division II Truman State University in Kirksville, MO. While at Truman State, he coached all four positions in the secondary and coordinated all phases of the program's special teams. While at Truman, Riley coached five all-conference players and coached one player to the all-region team. His kickoff return unit earned a top-20 national ranking. For two of the three seasons, Riley's players led the team in tackles. Jason Douglas (Lawrence, KS) recorded 88 tackles while Jesse Cooper (Miami, FL) totaled 81 tackles. Both players were named the team's MVP their respective years. Josh Mayson (Mexico, MO) was named to the all-region team as the starting corner, while kick-off returner Chandler Terry (St Louis, MO) was ranked in the top 15 in the nation among returners. While at Truman State, Riley coached Kurt Napier, brother of current Clemson Offensive Coordinator Billy Napier. During his three year stint at the school, Riley filled in as the program's recruiting coordinator on two separate occasions, taking over for coaches that had left at the end of the season.

Riley joined the Truman State staff after a one-year stint at Newberry College in Newberry, SC. Riley followed his college position coach Todd Knight and his head coach at the time from Pikeville College in Kentucky to Newberry College. While at Newberry, he performed the same role as the team's special teams coordinator and coach of all four defensive secondary positions. Riley was instrumental in developing a defense that improved over 70 yards passing per game from the 2002 season. He also coached punter Jeff Williams (Pelion, SC) to a #14 national ranking among punters and a second team all-conference selection. Also at Newberry, Riley had the pleasure to work with Joe Blackwell, brother of former Clemson assistant coach David Blackwell, and coach for Zak Willis, who was current Tiger associate head coach Brad Scott's graduate assistant during Scott's tenure as head coach at the University of South Carolina. He also coached the brother of current Clemson offensive lineman Dustin Freeman.

Prior to his brief stint at Newberry College, Riley was on the first ever football staff at Pikeville College in Pikeville, KY under Zak Willis. While at Pikeville, Riley worked in all phases of the program, including as the team's recruiting coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and secondary coach, and it was here that he had his first chance to coordinate special teams. Under Riley, the defensive backfield led the nation in interceptions their first of Riley's two years and finished in a tie for second his second season. Shawn Woodard (Rock Hill, SC), and Larry Forester and Justin Gordon, both natives of Wade Hampton, SC, earned all-conference honors while under the tutelage of Riley. In total, Riley coached seven players to all-conference honors in two years, including Williams, a two-time first team all-conference punter who was named the NAIA national and conference special teams player of the year.

Riley's second coaching position was at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. During the 2000 season Riley was again instrumental in assisting a defense that ranked number one in the nation in interceptions with 30 interceptions and only eight touchdowns against. It was at Fairfield that he coached Steve Dogmantis from Pennsylvania who was Riley's first AP All-American, Conference Defensive Player of the Year and national leader in interceptions with 13.

Riley started his coaching career at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, where he assisted Todd Knight with the secondary. During the spring season, he also had an opportunity to coach the outside linebackers prior to leaving for Fairfield. At Charleston Southern, Riley coached and played for David Dowd, who is now an assistant coach for Sumter High School in Sumter, SC.

Riley is a native of Beaufort, SC, where his parents currently reside. Riley graduated with a master's degree in Youth Development Leadership in the Health, Education and Human Development curriculum at Clemson University in May of 2009.
