Clemson, SC - Cliff Hammonds, senior captain on the 2007-08 Clemson basketball team, was announced last week as a runner-up for the Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year. Marcus Dixon of the Hampton University football team won the award, which was established by the magazine Diverse: Issues in Higher Education.

Hammonds was All-ACC on and off the court as a senior, where he led the Tigers to a 24-10 overall record and #22 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. He guided Clemson to the ACC Tournament championship game, only the second in school history, and back to the NCAA Tournament after a 10-year absence. Hammonds concluded his career ranked as Clemson's leader in games played, starts, consecutive starts, and minutes played.

He was the first-ever recipient of the ACC's "Skip" Prosser Award, given to the top men's basketball scholar-athlete in the conference. He also was a Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarship winner, one of three from Clemson. Hammonds earned degrees in architecture and psychology in May.
