Overview: Red-shirt sophomore point guard who hopes to challenge for considerable playing time this season...should give the Tigers outside firepower and an exciting offensive player...a strong three-point shooter as a freshman in limited action...saw action in 20 games as a red-shirt freshman...unable to play long spurts in 2005-06 due to offseason knee surgery he never fully recovered from...with improved stamina should see more playing time this season at point guard, along with senior Vernon Hamilton...showed promise with a pair of double digit scoring performances last season...has known Clemson frontcourt player and classmate James Mays since he was eight years old...the two North Carolinians have birthdays that are just one day apart, Mathis is March 7 and Mays is March 8.

In 2005-06: Appeared in 20 games overall and averaged 5.7 minutes per contest...led the team in outside shooting at 42.2 percent (19-45) from three-point range...all but four of his shot attempts as a red-shirt freshman were from long range...scored 58 points for an average of 2.9 per game...also had five assists and three steals in his limited playing time...shot 47.8 percent on threes in Clemson home games.

Best Games of 2005-06: Scored career-high 15 points in win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, the opening game of the San Juan Shootout...hit 5-6 from three-point range in that contest in just 15 minutes of play...had quite an ACC debut with 10 points in win over Florida State...shot 3-5 from three-point range in that game, including a rare four-point play...also made a three-pointer as the first half expired to give the Tigers a six-point advantage...had six points against Bethune-Cookman and S.C. State, making two long range shots in both games...played nine minutes and scored six points against Maryland, including 2-3 from three-point range...hit a three-pointer in the final seconds against Louisville to end the season.

In High School: Averaged 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals for Laurinburg Charter prep in Raleigh in 2003-04...had season highs of 40 points, 16 assists and nine steals as a senior....ranked as the #24 point guard in the nation by theinsiders.com...ranked as the 84th best player in the nation overall by SuperPrep...averaged 29 points per game as a junior, including the 73-point game against Crossnore that set the state of North Carolina record....his game included nine assists and 11 steals...shot 40 percent from three-point land and 80 percent from the foul line over his last two years of high school...played his high school basketball for Kenneth Gordon at Laurinburg.
