OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Clemson shortstop Khalil Greene received the 2002 Dick Howser player of the year trophy from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Friday.
Greene batted .480 with a school-record 26 homers while leading Clemson to the College World Series. He led the nation with 191 hits and 86 RBIs. He ranks second in the NCAA history with 398 career hits and 92 doubles.
The award was presented Friday in Omaha, where Greene will lead the Tigers against Nebraska on Friday night.
Greene credited his personal success to playing for team goals.
"I tried to fit in as a team player more than an individual player," he said. "The individual things would come."
The Howser Trophy was named after the former Florida State All-American
player who went on to play eight seasons in the major leagues and manage
the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. Howser died of cancer in
1987.
