CLEMSON, S.C. -- Fifth-ranked Clemson scored nine runs in the first inning en route to a 17-3 win against Coastal Carolina Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Sophomore lefthander Brian Adams (2-0) pitched seven innings, only allowing two hits, two walks, and one run to earn the victory. Chanticleer starter Tony Crossen (1-2) could not make it out of the first inning and suffered the loss.

Coastal Carolina (10-8) jumped on Adams in the first on a Brooks Marzka home run. But the Chanticleers would not score again off Adams, who only allowed one hit in innings two through seven. Adams' start was only the second of his career and was the longest outing of his career.

Home runs by Peter Nystrom and Matt Padgett highlighted the Tigers' nine-run first inning. Jason Harris put Clemson up 9-0 with two-run scoring double. Six of the nine runs scored in the inning were unearned. Clemson was aided by five walks in the opening inning. The Chanticleers also walked 15 Clemson batters in the game.

Clemson (17-2) scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Pinch hitter Paul Stryhas drove in two of the runs in the sixth on a double down the left field line.

Coastal Carolina was led by Marzka, who was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a home run. Clemson's Nystrom was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Patrick Boyd, Kurt Bultmann, and Mike Calitri also added two hits apiece for the Tigers.

With the win, Clemson has won 14 of the last 15 games.

Clemson will play host to Maine this weekend in a three game series beginning Friday at 3:00 PM.
