CLEMSON, SC -- Behind three home runs and the pitching of sophomore Ryan Mottl, Clemson downed East Carolina 8-2 at Tiger Field Sunday afternoon.
Clemson improves to 5-1, while East Carolina drops to 1-3.
Mottl (2-0) earned the victory by pitching seven innings, allowing four hits, two runs, and one walk while striking out five. East Carolina's Bill Outlaw (0-1) took the loss.
Clemson scored first in the third inning off a Jason Harris two-run homer, his second in as many days. The Tigers added two more runs in the following inning on a double by Henri Stanley, a single by freshman Justin Singleton, and a sacrifice fly by Doug Roper. Singleton, son of former Major Leaguer Ken Singleton, has had three hits in his first three collegiate at bats.
The Tigers added a run in the fifth on a Kurt Bultmann home run and three more runs on a Peter Nystrom long ball.
The Pirates scored their only two runs in the seventh inning when Billy Benson hit a towering homer to right, plating Steve Salargo, who had singled. Chris Shaffer also paced the Pirates with two hits in four at bats.
Clemson will play host to Old Dominion in a three-game set starting Friday at 3:00 PM.
