Head Coach Jack Leggett on Widmann: "Stan is the comeback player-of-the-year in my opinion. No one has worked harder through a more serious injury than him. He continues to keep working hard and is always looking for a way to make himself better. He has a great deal of pride and is one of our leaders as a team captain. He is a player who his teammates look up to in order to try to figure out how to be successful at this level. I'm so glad to have him back and so glad that he's healthy."
Team co-captain in 2008...stepped in to be the everyday starter at shortstop in both of his first two seasons at Clemson, but he suffered a serious season-ending neck injury after playing in the first six games of 2007...has a strong arm...works extremely hard on the field and in the weightroom...a career .303 hitter in 139 games (139 starts)...has 20 doubles, four triples, six homers, and 61 RBIs along with 25 stolen bases in 26 attempts; he was thrown out on his first career stolen-base attempt, therefore he has successfully stolen 25 bases in a row.
2007: Drafted in the 39th round (#1187 overall pick) by the Oakland Athletics...hit .409 with five runs scored, a double, triple, homer, six RBIs, a .458 on-base percentage, and three steals in six games (all starts at shortstop); Clemson was 5-1 in those six starts...walked twice and struck out just once...suffered a season-ending neck injury in late February and had surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota on March 27...totaled at least two hits in four of the six games...was 3-for-6 (.500) with runners in scoring postion...did not commit an error in 25 chances in the field, including six putouts and 19 assists...went 2-for-4 with a solo homer against Pacific on Feb. 23...went 2-for-4 with three RBIs batting at the leadoff spot in the first game of a doubleheader against Pacific on Feb. 24.
