Head Coach Jack Leggett on Clyne: "Stephen is a senior righthanded pitcher who's been around for a while. He has a strong arm and a good slider. He just needs to develop that consistency so we know what we can count on from him. He has improved a great deal from last year, and I think he can make a significant contribution to the success of this team if he continues to work hard."
2006: Had a 1-1 record and 2.59 ERA in 16 appearances (24.1 innings pitched) as a middle reliever...only allowed 17 hits (one home run) and had a team-best .191 opponents' batting average...had 26 strikeouts against five walks, good for a 5.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio...the only Tiger with at least 3.0 innings pitched who did not throw a wild pitch...held lefthanded batters to a team-best .176 batting average...held opponents to a team-best .171 batting average with runners on base...threw 28 groundball outs compared to 16 flyball outs...had a 1.69 ERA, .158 opponents' batting average, and 21 strikeouts against two walks in 10 appearances at home...had an 0.87 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched against top-25 ranked teams...after allowing two runs against Maryland on Apr. 9, he pitched 15.1 innings in his final eight relief appearances, and allowed just 10 hits (nine singles and one double), no runs, and two walks with 15 strikeouts...pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief in the first game of a doubleheader against Mercer on Feb. 26...pitched 2.0 perfect innings in relief with two strikeouts to earn the win against William & Mary on Mar. 8...pitched 1.1 hitless innings, allowing no earned runs and no walks with two strikeouts against Western Carolina on Apr. 4...pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of one-hit ball at #10 Georgia Tech on Apr. 16...pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, no runs, and no walks with two strikeouts against Furman on Apr. 19...pitched the final 1.1 innings without allowing a run or walk and struck out three against Virginia Tech on Apr. 28...pitched 3.0 innings in relief, allowing one hit, no runs, and no walks with four strikeouts in the second game of a doubleheader at Duke on May 8...pitched 1.1 scoreless and hitless innings in relief with two strikeouts against #13 Florida State on May 12...pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and no walks with three strikeouts against #22 Wake Forest on May 20...pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of two-hit ball in relief in the first game of a doubleheader against #7 Georgia Tech in the ACC Tournament on May 27...played for Thomasville in the Coastal Plain League in the summer, where he was 2-1 with a 2.22 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched over six appearances (four starts); he also allowed only 19 hits (16 singles, three doubles) and nine walks with 29 strikeouts; in game one of the Petitt Cup, he threw a shutout to eliminate Edenton, the two-time defending champion, by allowing just three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.
2005: Had a 2-0 record with a 3.45 ERA and two saves in 19 relief appearances (28.2 innings pitched)...struck out 30 against 11 walks (three of which were intentional)...did not allow a home run or wild pitch...only allowed five of 18 inherited runners to score...finished the game in 15 (team-high) of his 19 appearances...pitched 2.1 perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts against East Carolina at Myrtle Beach, SC on Feb. 20; it was his first career outing...retired all three batters on strikeouts to record his first career save against #18 California-Irvine on Feb. 25...retired all four batters he faced, including two on strikeouts, against #9 North Carolina on Mar. 18...pitched the final 2.1 innings without allowing a baserunner and struck out two at Old Dominion on Mar. 23...earned his first career win in a relief role against Duke on Apr. 10...struck out seven in 4.0 innings pitched in relief at N.C. State on Apr. 22...pitched 3.0 innings with four strikeouts to record the save against Elon on Apr. 26...earned the win in relief by retiring the only batter he faced against #6 Georgia Tech on Apr. 30...pitched the final 0.2 innings with a strikeout and a pickoff against Virginia in the ACC Tournament on May 25...pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief against North Carolina A&T in the Clemson Regional on Jun. 3...pitched 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings in relief at #6 Baylor in the Waco Super Regional on Jun. 12.
2004: Entered the season coming off "Tommy John" surgery and did not appear in any games.
2003: Red-shirted...played for Florence in the Coastal Plain League in the summer.
BEFORE CLEMSON: Set the American Heritage School record for career wins (21) and ERA (0.34) in a season...player-of-the-year for A, AA, and AAA as a senior...AAA all-state as a senior...led his team to the state finals, and set single-season school records for wins (11) and ERA (0.34)...Team One Showcase member as a junior...all-county and AAA all-state as a junior...had 10 wins and a 1.00 ERA as a junior; he also struck out 60 in 49.0 innings pitched...member of the state runnerup team as a freshman, where he pitched a perfect game...lettered three times in baseball and twice in football...coached by Todd Fitzgerald.
