Be a T.I.G.E.R! is a unique character education initiative sponsored by the Clemson Athletics Department. The aim of this program is to incorporate specific character traits into a comprehensive educational program that highlights Clemson's Athletes and Traditions.
The basic intent is to unify our message of Solid Orange making it more profound. Clemson Athletes will deliver this message -"What it means to Be a T.I.G.E.R!" - in all speaking engagements and personal appearances. This focused approach using preplanned lessons and activities will emphasize our belief that athletics builds character and Clemson Athletes believe that character development is an important component in their total educational experience.
Be a T.I.G.E.R! is designed to appeal to kindergarten through 5th graders. Using the acronym for TIGER; T=Teamwork, I=Integrity, G=Gratitude, E=Education, R=Respect, age appropriate lessons and activities have been developed using a sports format. The program currently has these components:
* 12 page newspaper written by the athletes and coaches
* E-mail buddy program called T.I.G.E.R! Talk that mentors at risk elementary students using a directed conversation on Clemson's Digital Express
* Assembly programs and personal appearances by student athletes
* Annual Field Day held in the spring on Jervey Meadows
Other components are being developed as needed. We are very proud to be the first Division I University to develop a focused character education program to be used by its athletes in our community services program.
