CLEMSON TEAMS DEFEAT MIAMI ON TRAINING TRIP
The Clemson women's and men's
swimming teams defeated Miami December 18, during the first meet of the Tigers' Christmas
training trip to Florida.
The men recorded a 140-59 win, taking first place in each event. Freshman Kenny
Roberts won the 100 free in 47.26 and the 200 free with a time of 1:44.11. Freshman Andy
Meek was also a dual winner, taking first in the 500 free (4:39.03) and the 1000 free
(9:37.77). The women took a 115-90 win over the Hurricanes. Leading the way for
the Tigers were first-place finishers Wendy Henson in the 200 free (1:53.2), Katie Mizell
in the 200 fly (206.16) and Jen Mooney in the 200 back (2:07.96). Both Tiger relay teams
took first place at the meet.
TIGERS DEFEAT FLORIDA ATLANTIC TO SWEEP TRAINING TRIP
Both Tiger swim
teams defeated Florida Atlantic on December 22 to conclude Clemson's holiday training
trip. The women defeated the Owls 122-57, recording first-place in each event. Freshman
Cami Sink won the 500 free with a time of 5:07.13 and earned a NCAA provisional qualifying
time of 4:22.83 to win the 400 IM.
The men's team defeated the Owls 120-74. Freshman Kenny Roberts won the 100 fly
in 51.84 and the 200 free with a time of 1:41.86. Brett Walker took first in the 50 free
(21.56), and Will Rogers won the 100 free (47.09). Tim Collis placed first in the 100 back
with a time of 51.04, and Andy Meek won the 500 free in 4:38.84.
CLEMSON WOMEN RANK 20TH NATIONALLY
The Clemson women's swimming team ranks
20th nationally, according to the latest Speedo America's College Swimming Coaches
Association Poll. The Tigers moved up from a 25th-place ranking in the preseason.
The team is led by freshman Cami Sink, who ranks fifth nationally with a time of
4:15.33 in the 400 IM. Her time in the 200 IM, 2:01.05, is the tenth-best time in the
nation. Sink ranks 24th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.89.
Junior Jennifer Mihalik ranks fourth nationally in the 200 back (1:59.31) , and
senior Kathy Lowry is 18th in the 50 free with a time of 23.35. Senior Wendy Henson is
21st in the 200 free (1:49.35) and 14th in the 500 free (4:49.28).
The Clemson women's team ranks seventh nationally in the 400 free relay (3:23.75)
and is eighth nationally in the 200 free relay (1:33.72). The Tiger men's team ranks 16th
nationally in the 200 free relay (1:22.45).
CLEMSON SWIMMERS AMONG ACC LEADERS
Several Clemson swimmers rank among the
ACC leaders, including freshman Cami Sink, who has the fastest time in the league this
season in the 400 IM (4:15.33). Sink ranks second in the 200 IM, recording a time of
2:01.05. Freshman Katie Mizell leads the conference in the 200 fly (2:02.45) and ranks
second in the 100 fly (55.99). Senior Wendy Henson leads the league in the 500
free with a time of 4:49.28 and ranks second in the 200 free (1:49.35), while junior Erin
Schatz leads the ACC in the 1000 free (10:01.62) and ranks second in the 500 free
(4:53.81).
Junior Jennifer Mihalik ranks first in the 200 back (1:59.31) and is second in
the 100 free, having recorded a time of 50.92. Senior Kathy Lowry is second in the 50 free
(23.35) and third in the 100 free (51.09). The Clemson women's team, ranked 20th
nationally, has the fastest time in the conference in the 400 free relay (3:23.75) and
ranks second in the 200 free relay (1:33.72).
The Clemson men's team has the second-fastest time in the ACC for the 200 free
relay (1:22.45) and the third-fastest time in the 800 free relay (6:47.99). Tim Collis
ranks third in the 100 back after recording a time of 50.16.
SINK CAN SWIM
Freshman Cami Sink, from Charleston, SC, established three
new Clemson records at the Nike Cup meet. Her time of 4:15.33 in the 400 IM was five
seconds faster than the previous record of 4:20.47, set by Paulette Russell. In the 200
breaststroke, Sink swam a time of 2:17.89. Russell also held the previous record at
2:18.02. Sink swam a time of 2:01.05 in the 200 IM, breaking Jill Bakehorn's previous time
of 2:02.11. All three times are NCAA Qualifying times, with the 400 IM time qualifying
Sink automatically for the championship meet. Both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM times
are NCAA provisional qualifying cuts.
ROBERTS NAMED SPORTSMAN-OF-THE-YEAR
Clemson freshman Kenny Roberts has been
named the Seychelless Sportsman-of-the-Year. Roberts leads the Tigers in the 100 free
after posting a time of 45.77 at the Nike Cup. He ranks second in the 200 free, recording
a time of 1:41.86 in the 200 free at Florida Atlantic during the Tigers' training trip to
Florida. Roberts is a member of the 400 medley relay and the 200, 400 and 800 free relay
teams that have posted Clemson's fastest times this season.
