January 11, 1999
CLEMSON, S.C. - The Clemson women's swimming team ranks 22nd nationally, according to the latest Speedo America's College Swimming Coaches Association Poll. The Tigers dropped from a 20th-place ranking in the last poll. Clemson defeated 18th-ranked North Carolina last Friday in Clemson. The team is led by Freshman Cami Sink, from Charleston, SC, who established three new Clemson records at the Nike Cup meet. Her time of 4:15.33 in the 400 IM was five seconds faster than the previous record of 4:20.47, set by Paulette Russell. In the 200 breaststroke, Sink swam a time of 2:17.89. Russell also held the previous record at 2:18.02. Sink swam a time of 2:01.05 in the 200 IM, breaking Jill Bakehorn's previous time of 2:02.11. All three times are NCAA Qualifying times, with the 400 IM time qualifying Sink automatically for the championship meet. Both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM times are NCAA provisional qualifying cuts. Clemson (4-2, 1-1 ACC) will play host to South Carolina Saturday at 1 p.m. The complete poll is as follows: 1 Stanford 2 Georgia 3 SMU 4 Arizona 5 Southern California 6 California 7 Auburn 8 Nebraska 9 Texas 10 Michigan 11 Florida 12 Northwestern 13 Minnesota 14 Nevada 15 UCLA 16 Tennessee 17 Wisconsin 18 North Carolina 19 Kentucky 20 Appalachian State 21 Virginia 22 CLEMSON 23 Notre Dame 24 Texas A&M 25 Columbia
