College Park, MD- The Clemson Swimming and Diving team finished Saturday night in seventh place at the ACC Championships. Virginia won their eighth straight ACC title with 694 points. They narrowly finished ahead of Florida State who took second with 685.5 points. North Carolina was third (496.5), Georgia Tech (371) took home fourth, and North Carolina State (362) was fifth. Virginia Tech (334.5) beat Clemson (293) by just 41.5 points for sixth place. Maryland (222.5), Duke (99), Boston College (70), and Miami (37) completed the field.
In the 1650 freestyle, Jonathan Mengering placed himself in the top eight with his career fastest time of 15:25.84. This kept him in fourth place on the Clemson all-time list and was an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Sean Geary landed in 12th place with his time of 15:54.01. Geary had been fourth prior to the final heat.
Charlie Dillon took second in the consolation finals, and 10th overall to the tune of 1:49.18. Dillon had recorded a career fastest time of 1:49.02 in the morning to crack the top-five in Clemson history. Joel Johnson moved up from 16th to finish 14th in the consolation final heat. Johnson touched the wall with a time of 1:50.50 to earn three points. Taylor Thompson (1:50.55) and Jay Crout (1:53.15) finished second and third in the bonus consolation heat, 18th and 19th overall.
Brian Regone finished eighth in the 100 freestyle. He posted a time of 45.27 tonight, after swimming a time of 44.64 in the morning, an NCAA Provisional cut. Mark Vahle tied for 10th with Pete Cancila from Virginia Tech. Both sprinters swam times of 44.95. Greg Middleton swam a career fastest time of 46.17 in the bonus consolation finals to finish 21st.

In the last event of the championships, Clemson finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Mark Vahle, Stephen Russell, Matt Balderston, and Brian Regone recorded a time of 2:59.18, an NCAA Provisional Qualifying time. Regone split a 43.76 as the anchor leg on the relay.
