Chapel Hill, NC - The Clemson Men's Swimming and Diving team powered through the Friday morning session of the ACC Championships today at Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, NC. The Tigers were led by strong performances by Adam Farnham in the 100 butterfly and Joel Johnson in the 100 backstroke. Both competitors qualified for tonight's championship heat in their respective events.
Farnham (Mt. Berry, GA) recorded the fifth best time in Clemson history in the 100 butterfly with a 48.85. He will be seeded fifth for tonight's finals. Johnson, a senior from North Augusta, SC will be seeded third in the 100 backstroke tonight. Johnson swam a time of 48.91, bettering his career best of 48.92 from last year's ACC meet. Other Tigers that qualified for a second swim tonight were Matt Angelini (3:57.05) and Andy Bergren (3:58.37) who will participate in the consolation finals of the 400 IM. Angelini qualified ninth, while Bergren was 12th. Junior Mark Vahle tied his career best time of 49.14 in the 100 butterfly, and will be seeded 13th tonight. Clemson placed three swimmers in the consolation finals of the 200 freestyle as well. Brett MacLennan (1:38.90), Daniel Mengering (1:39.23), and Bryce Herrington (1:39.92) will be seeded ninth, 11th, and 15th in the heat. All three were career best times. Attila Ruszka, fresh off his silver medal in the 200 IM last night, finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.11. Bergren qualified 19th with a time of 57.53 in the 100 breast. On the three-meter board, David Giambra claimed his second 14th place finish of the meet for Clemson. He recorded a six-dive score of 274.95 in the event.
