CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Jenna Burtch was involved in top eight finishes in six different events, leading Clemson's women's swimming team to a third-place finish at the ACC Swimming and Diving Championships held at The University of North Carolina over the weekend.

The Lady Tigers finished third with 476.5 points, trailing only champion and host North Carolina (842.5) and second-place Virginia (693.5). Maryland was fourth with 442, while Florida State was fifth at 395.5. NC State finished sixth with 365 points, and Duke was seventh at 132.

Bruce Marchionda's young team had 10 athletes record top eight, or championship heat finishes. All 10 were underclassmen, including five freshmen and three sophomores.

Burtch finished seventh in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. She also competed on Clemson's 200 free relay (4th), the 400 medley relay (4th), the 200 medley relay (5th) and the 400 free relay (7th).

Ginny Kirouac, a sophomore from Norcross, GA, was the only Lady Tiger to have three top eight finishes in individual events. She was third in the 400 IM, tying for the highest finish by a Lady Tiger in an event, with a NCAA provisional time of 4:18.66. She was also sixth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 200 back.

Mandy Commons and Catherine Blaney had a pair of final eight individual finishes and were also on two relays that finished in the final eight. Commons, a freshman from Cincinnati, had a third-place finish in the 100 breast in an NCAA provisional time of 1:03.15 and was eighth in the 200 breast. Blaney, a freshman from Columbia, SC, was eighth in the 200 free and eighth in the 1650 free.

Two other Lady Tigers had a pair of top eight finishes. Betsy Potter, a junior from Elmira, NY, made her contribution to the Clemson diving cause with a third place finish in the one-meter event with 372.2 points, and was sixth in the three-meter event with 425.2 points. Liz Dwors, a freshman from Fort Lauderdale, FL, was fourth in the 500 free with a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 4:51.83 and was seventh in the 1650 free with a time of 16:55.42.

 

 

Other Lady Tigers who had top eight individual finishes were Katie Mizell (100 fly, 8th), Leslie Anderson (100 breast, 8th), Nina Douglas (100 back, 7th) and Courtney Ellis (200 breast, 6th). Anderson and Mizell were also on a pair of top eight relay teams.
