Clemson Swimming and Diving Sweeps North Carolina State
Jan. 29, 2005 The Clemson men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept four different events as the Tigers defeated North Carolina State by scores of 143-88 (men) and 135-108 (women) on Saturday morning at the McHugh Natatorium in Clemson's final Atlantic Coast Conference meet of the regular season. Kim Routh earned three individual event victories, winning the 200 free, the 500 free, and the 1000 free. The Clemson men opened the meet winning the 400 medley relay with a season-best time of 3:20.98. The mark was more than three seconds faster than the previous top time of the season. Clemson swept the 1000 free as Jon Mengering (9:26.74), Brett MacLennan (9:28.88), and Sean Geary (9:29.47) took first, second, and third place respectively. Both Mengering's and MacLennan's times were personal bests. Clemson took the top two places in the 200 free as Buddy Reed took first place with a time of 1:41.30 and Greg Middleton took second place with a time of 1:42.54. Atilla Ruszka won the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.28. Clemson earned the top two spots in the 200 back as Charlie Dillon (1:50.98) and Buddy Reed (1:51.18) took first and second place. Clemson swept another event as Jon Mengering (4:35.89), Brett MacLennan (4:37.59), and Sean Geary (4:41.98) were the top finishers in the 500 free. Eric Shulick won the men's one-meter diving with a score of 312.30, setting a season-best score in six-dive competition. Shulick also won the men's three-meter event with a score of 337.58.
Kim Routh won the 1000 free event with a top time of 10:09.76 for the Lady Tigers. Clemson later swept the 200 free as Kim Routh (1:53.08), Christine Anseeuw (1:53.22), and Peg Carter (1:54.89) took the top three spots. Clemson also swept the 50 free as Ashley Shafer (24.63), Kallie Deters (24.86), and Rachel McLaurin (25.13) earned the top spots. Christine Anseeuw took first place in the 100 free with a time of 52.49. Kim Routh was victorious in the 500 free with a winning time of 4:58.13. Ashley Shafer and Aurelie Gresset took the top two spots in the 200 breast with final times of 2:21.82 and 2:23.18 respectively. Clemson took the top place in the 400 free relay with a winning time of 3:37.18. With the win, the Clemson men improve to 5-7 overall, 2-4 in the ACC, while the women improve to 6-7 overall, 2-4 in ACC action. Clemson returns to action next Saturday as the Tigers play host to Davidson in Clemson's regular season finale. |
