Tiger Participants In the NCAAs Two Clemson athletes are qualified in the 60m high hurdles. Todd Mathhews and Sultan Tucker boh qualified with times of 7.73. Tucker's time was set at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 10. Matthews achieved his qualifying time at the ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 17. Both times are currently eighth-best in the nation and are automatic qualifying times. Ato Modibo holds the ninth-best time in the nation with a mark of 46.40 in the 400m dash. Modibo posted the automatic time at the Iowa State Classic on Feb. 10. Jacey Harper's converted time of 20.96 qualified him in the 200m dash. His qualifying time was set at the Nike Fast Times Meet on Feb. 28 and is the 16th-fastest mark of the season. Malcolm Reynolds qualified in the high jump with a mark of 7'2 1/4" or 2.19m. He set the mark at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 20.
Clemson Wins ACC Indoor Championships In the 60m hurdles, Clemson swept the top three spots. Todd Matthews recorded an automatic qualifying time of 7.73 en route to the individual title. Sultan Tucker was second with a provisional qualifying time of 7.75 and Ian Potter finished third overall with a time of 7.99. The Tigers' Jacey Harper claimed the 60m dash with a time of 6.74 while Larry Griffin was second in 6.89. Sultan Tucker was also a scorer for Clemson in the 60m with a sixth place finish (6.99).
The Tigers took the top three finishes in the 200m dash. Jacey Harper won the event in 21.35 while Ato Modibo was second in 21.50. Spain was third with a time of 21.66 and Maull was fifth in 21.91. The Tigers 4x400m relay team of Spain, Harper, Copes and Modibo won the event in 3:14.08, a provisional qualifying time. Doug Ameigh won the men's high jump with a mark of 7'0 1/2" while Malcolm Reynolds placed third (7'0 1/2"). Bryant Howe finished fifth with a mark of 6'83/4" and Terrance McDaniel was 14th (6'4 3/4"). Benjamin Hess placed fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 16'4 3/4" and Adam Klotzbach was sixth (15'11"). In the triple jump, Maull finished third with a mark of 50'7 1/4" while Lloyd was fourth (49'5"). McDaniel posted a seventh place finish (47'5 3/4") and Barrow was eighth with a mark of 47'4 1/2". Brett Varner finished fourth overall in the weight throw with a mark of 57'10 1/2" and David Schenek was sixth with a mark of 57'0 3/4".
Tigers At The 2000 Meet In a tight race with John Capel of Florida, Crawford finished the race in 20.252, followed by Capel in 20.257 to win the second national championship of his career. Crawford won the event in 1998 as a sophomore. The time broke the American record of 20.32 held by Rohsaan Griffin and Kevin Little. In the preliminaries of the event, Crawford recorded a time of 20.33, breaking the previous collegiate record of 20.36 set by UTEP's Obadele Thompson in 1996. Crawford finished fourth with a time of 6.67 in the 60m dash, earning his second All-America citation of the meet. Sultan Tucker placed eighth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.97 to earn All-American honors. David Collins placed 18th in the 60m hurdles with a time of 6.82. In the 400m, Ato Modibo failed to advance to the finals after placing 15th with a time of 47.33. After a bad start, Modibo was unable to recover in his race. The Tiger 4x400m relay team of Charles Allen, Otto Spain, Crawford and Jacey Harper placed 10th with a time of 3:11.52 to conclude the meet.
Tigers In The Record Books Tucker's 7.73 second performance in the 60m hurdles at the Iowa State Classic moved him into second place on Clemson's all-time best list. Matthews also improved his time to 7.73 in the 60m hurdles to tie Tucker for second on the all-time list. Harper is fourth all-time in the 200m dash with a time of 21.05. Reynolds is third on the high jump list with a mark of 7'2 1/4". Schenek moved into third on the weight throw list with a mark of 58'4 3/4" and Brett Varner is fourth with a mark of 57'10 1/2".

Pollock Named Southeast Region Coach Of The Year
Clemson Under Pollock In his first season with the Tigers, Pollock's team claimed the 1989 ACC indoor title. Clemson won four more consecutive titles from 1990-1993 until Florida State ended the streak in 1994. The Tiger track and field team has won the last five ACC Indoor Championships (1997-2001).
Pollock has coached 60 indoor All-Americans. The Tigers have finished in the top ten in the nation six times in the last 13 years. |
