Clemson Strength Training Staff Bios

Larry Greenlee, M. Ed. (SSC, SCCC, USAW, NASE)
Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning

Larry Greenlee is in his tenth year as a full time Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach at Clemson. Larry served as a graduate assistant for two years under Director Joey Batson.

Greenlee serves as the Assistant Director of Strength, Speed and Conditioning where he supervises all Assistant Coaches, Graduate Assistants, Undergraduate Assistants, and Volunteers under the Direction of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Greenlee assists with the Tiger Football Strength, Speed and Conditioning program working with skill positions (Receivers, Defensive Backs, Kickers and Punters). He also provides direct supervision to all aspects of the Tiger Olympic Sports programs. Other responsibilities include overseeing the Tigers 14,000 square foot training facility.

As a nationally ranked track and field athlete, Larry began his career at North Carolina State University. After one year he transferred to Clemson University, accumulating four ACC Championship Titles two National Runner-up titles.

Greenlee is a member of the NSCA, CSCCA, ISSA and the USAW. He is a certified Specialist in Sports Conditioning (SSC) with the International Sports Science Association. Larry is also certified by the USA Weightlifting corporation, specializing in Olympic lifts. Greenlee recently added the Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach (SCCC) organized by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

Larry and his wife Shirley have two children: D.J. (12) and Sydnee (4).

David Abernethy, MS (SCCC, NASE, CSNC)
Senior Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

David Abernethy is in his third year serving as senior assistant with Clemson University. He served under Batson for two years as a graduate assistant from 1999-2001. Abernethy coordinates all strength and conditioning activities for Olympic sports and serves as an assistant with football. Prior to Clemson, he served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Western Kentucky University from 2003-2005. He was in charge of all 20 varsity teams and worked directly with football and men’s basketball.

Abernethy went to Western Kentucky after serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Mississippi under Ruben Mendoza from 2001-2003, who now is the Director at Notre Dame. He primarily worked with football, women’s soccer and softball.

Abernethy played football at Western Carolina University where he was a starting guard in 1997 and 1998. This followed after transferring from Methodist College, where he was the starting left tackle on the offensive line in 1994 and 1995 and won the team's rookie of the year award. He graduated from Western Carolina in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Abernethy received his Masters degree from Western Kentucky University in Exercise Science. He also completed graduate work in Education from Clemson in 1999-2001. He is a certified member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Association of Speed and Explosion and certified through the American Fitness Professionals Association as a Certified Sports Nutrition Consultant.  Abernethy is married to the former Kelli Iddings of Denver, NC and they have a daughter, Madilyn (3).

David Helms, M. Ed. (CCS, NASE)
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

avid Helms is in his fourth year with the Tigers serving as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach after serving the department for three years as a graduate assistant. Helms designs and implements strength and conditioning programs for the baseball team as well as assists with the Football Strength, Speed and Conditioning program. He is also coordinator for the Clemson Strength & Conditioning Power Station.

Helms started his career as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at The University of South Carolina for a year before moving on to The University of Arkansas. At both schools he worked with football and was in charge of the men's and women's swimming and diving strength and conditioning programs, the men's golf team and the cheerleading squads. Before coming to Clemson, Helms was the Strength and Conditioning coach at Myrtle Beach High School, where he also coached football.  Helms played football at Newberry College for three years before transferring to The University of South Carolina where he graduated in 1986. Helms completed his Masters degree from Clemson in Education.  He played football and baseball at Conway High School for four years and graduated in 1981. David and his wife Kathy have a son, Hunter (2).

Dennis Love
Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach

Dennis Love is in his first year as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for Olympic sports after spending four years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. In his new position, Love will work directly with volleyball and women's tennis while assisting with the football team. In conjunction with David Abernethy, Love will also oversee the training programs for several other Olympic sports.

During the 2007-08 season, Love trained the volleyball and women's tennis teams, both of which claimed ACC titles during their respective seasons. Eight student-athletes from the combined programs were named all-conference while volleyball senior Meghan Steiner was recognized as an NSCA Strength & Conditioning All-American. Love also trained Ani Mijacika, who rose to the #1 singles ranking in the Fila/ITA Tennis poll in 2008 and ranked as the #2 player in the nation in the final poll.

Before coming to Clemson, Love spent two seasons as a Strength and Conditioning Coach at Catawba College and completed an internship at the Athletes Performance Institute in Tempe, AZ. At Athletes Performance, he worked with professional athletes ranging from football, basketball, baseball, tennis, soccer, hockey and golf. He helped the Athletes Performance Specialists implement strength, speed, agility, flexibility and mobility programs, while assisting with the daily operation and maintenance of the facility.

Prior to his time in Arizona, Love held the title of Sports Director, among others, for KIDSSPORTS in Salisbury, NC. He developed and oversaw all sports programs for youth and adults, while serving as a physical education instructor for children ages 4-12.

A native of Cheraw, SC, Love played football and baseball on the collegiate level at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. He graduated with a degree in Recreation in 2000 and earned his Master's degree in student affairs with an emphasis in counseling from Clemson University in May of 2008. Love is certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion and currently resides in Seneca, SC.
