Career Enhancement

[Options to Consider] [Career Planning Services] {Freshman] [Sophomores] [Juniors/Seniors] [Using the Clemson Network] [The Rules] [Career Enhancement]

Career preparation begins with incoming freshmen and continues through graduation from Clemson University. A full-time career enhancement specialist is assigned the responsibility of coordinating this program, designed for the employment welfare of each student athlete. The career enhancement program assists student athletes in the three areas that are critical for future employment:
  • Enhance the marketability of student athletes as potential employees through a series of programs which may begin as early as their freshman year.
  • Help student athletes gain valuable job experience during their enrollment at Clemson. This will be done by assisting the student athletes with summer jobs, internships, and practical experiences.
  • Expose the student athletes to permanent employment opportunities, interviews, and business contacts.

Options to Consider:
Work Experience If possible, we try to find employment related to the student athlete&acutes ultimate goals. For example, if an athlete wants to be an attorney, we contact local law firms to see if they need administrative assistance or other help. If a student athlete is interested in broadcasting, we assist in obtaining a job at a local radio or television station.

Technical Colleges, Community Colleges and Other Training Opportunities We investigate training programs offered by local colleges, business schools, and trade schools.

Volunteer Work Student athletes can make a valuable contribution to society and enhance their resumes by performing volunteer work in their fields of interest. This experience can also help student athletes make career decisions about new fields that they may not have considered.

Mentors We arrange for student athletes to obtain mentors in their fields of study. These people can provide career advice and introduce student athletes to individuals who can help them obtain employment or financial assistance for returning to school.

Career Planning Services at Clemson:
To assist student athletes with their career plans, Clemson University&acutes Career Center offers these services:

Career Counseling Professional career counseling is offered to help student athletes choose a career direction that is compatible with their plans and resources. The Career Center can also help students make decisions about continuing their education and choosing majors.

Computerized Career guidance and Career Information Library Several stare-of-the-art guidance packages are available that can provide student athletes a wealth of information about themselves and their careers.

Using the Clemson Network

Finding the right job can be difficult. That is why Clemson University&acutes Athletic Department and Career Center are committed to working with student athletes to help them identify career opportunities and set career goals.

With the assistance of local businesses, student athletes can gain experience in their chosen fields that will complement the solid education base provided to them at Clemson University. Experience in the field is one thing that helps a well-educated graduate stand head and shoulders above the competition.

A network of employers who are interested in hiring our student athletes can work to match these students with job opportunities that give them a competitive edge. Ideally, the student athletes will be able to work at summer jobs that will lead to full-time employment positions after graduation.

These are the Rules
We think all clemson students are special. We want to make sure our student athletes are treated fairly and that all NCAA regulations are followed. These are the regulations that must be met for employing student athletes:
  • Student athletes can work during the entire summer, from the end of final examinations in the spring semester until the beginning of classes in the fall, and during official University holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).
  • All compensation received by student athletes must only be for actual work, performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.
  • It is impermissible for employers to use the student athlete&acutes reputation, publicity, fame or personal following to promote business or sales.
  • Contacting prospective student athletes for employment before they officially sign with the University is prohibited. However, after they sign a national letter of intent to enroll at the University, employers may hire them for summer employment.

CRG demonstrates to potential business clients how athletes possess these skills. Through an interviewing process on campus, CRG recruits our student-athletes for future employment.

This program is monitored through our career coordinator and the compliance office to ensure that NCAA rules are followed and abided by.

Career Fair — A career fair for student-athletes is provided during the year. This allows our students to meet future employers and learn first hand what it takes to compete in the business world. This is a fantastic opportunity for our student-athletes.

Job Placement /Alumni — This is a follow-up program that allows us to know where our graduates are employed. Upon graduation a reception is provided for out student-athletes and their parents. This allows our student-athletes the opportunity to register with our career counselor and gives us a networking program for future Clemson student-athletes.

Promotions and Marketing — Our student-athletes upon graduation are put in numerous publications to allow employers the opportunity to see who is graduating in different fields and opens up further job placement.

Conclusion

We want to provide our student-athletes with every opportunity to succeed. Through our educational programs offered by Vickery Hall and our career center we feel they have the opportunity to develop their employment skills while they are attending Clemson University. They also can gain actual experience through our job programs and network with companies and alumni for future job employment. Our main objective is for our student-athletes to graduate and make a strong contribution to our society. We want them to be leaders and provide opportunities for others.
